None of us like to think about the possibility of losing our personal independence. But if an accident or illness were to happen and you were unable to perform the basic activities of daily living, such as bathing, eating, walking, dressing, or toileting, you’d have no choice but to rely on your loved ones. Or you could use up your savings on private care, because your Government Health Insurance Plan, unfortunately, offers only limited coverage for home nursing care and in-home assistance.

This plan was designed to help you maintain your independence, dignity and savings. This plan is the only insurance protection available in Canada that focuses exclusively on home care coverage.

How does this plan work?
Upon the occurrence of an accident or illness that leaves you needing either short or long-term assistance with the daily activities of living,
  • Your situation will be assessed and approved by an independent third party home care provider organization,
  • To ensure your claim is evaluated objectively, a Care Co-ordinator will then arrange for the appropriate level of home care to be immediately provided,
  • No waiting period will apply,
  • Your Care Co-ordinator will monitor your progress and maintain regular contact with both you and your caregiver(s), and
  • Your Care Co-ordinator will provide you with the flexibility to change caregiver(s), as circumstances warrant.

Who can apply for this?
If you are 21 to 75 years of age you are eligible to apply for this coverage. Once approved you are covered for life, as long as your premiums are paid.

How do you qualify for benefits?
To receive the daily benefit for in-home care and assistance offered by this plan, you do not need to be completely disabled or critically ill. You simply need to be unable to perform two or more of the basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s), or be diagnosed with a cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s Disease.

Activities of Daily Living include:
  • Bathing: the ability to draw water, get in and out of the tub or shower, or wash and dry your entire body.
  • Eating: the ability to consume food that has already been prepared and made available, with or without the use of adaptive utensils
  • Dressing: the ability to put on and take off all necessary items of clothing, including the ability to put on and remove medical braces or artificial limbs
  • Toileting: the ability to get to and from the toilet, on and off the toilet, and associated personal hygiene
  • Transferring: the ability to get in and out of a chair or bed, to walk or wheel any distance on a level surface

If you choose the long term care plan that includes Return of Premium Add-On coverage, all the premiums you have paid will be returned in full to your beneficiary should you die without making a claim.

The premiums vary depending on your age and gender. Once insured, your premiums will not increase due to age or health. So the younger you are when you apply for coverage, the lower your monthly premiums will be. Even if premiums increase in the future, your monthly premiums will still reflect the age you were when you first enrolled.
